Dog Friendly Beach

As we all have dogs and may want to take them with us... have you any suggestions for holdiay destinations etc that are dog friendly and where you had a great time?

Dog Friendly Beach

Post by julie »

We took Honey to Dorset last year and had a fab day on Weymouth beach  . There is a special dog section which has loads of poo bins, water taps etc and is close to human amenities too. Dogs can go on this section at all times in the year; its a nice, clean, sandy beach with no restrictions on letting dogs in the sea etc.
:( The drawbacks though are:
1) its at the other end of the beach and quite a walk from the main carparks
2) its quite small so get there before 11am-ish
3) there's no shade at all so take your own - Honey has a half tent like the anglers use.
Lulworth Cove is another close by for the Goldens who like a swim. Lovely and clean but a pebble beach. Great access from the carpark but the walks are quite steep.

We live in North Yorkshire a lot of the beaches are not dog friendly in summer (some where the dogs are banned and some simply because of the amount of rubbish broken glass etc)
Good beaches are
Upgang beach on the Sandsend side of Whitby easily accessible from the nearby caravan site
Skinningrove/Cattersty beach about 30mins north of Whitby and 5 mins south of Saltburn good car park through village a path round to the main beach long clean sandy beach can get well out of the way of non doggy folk no amenities though other than litter and poop bins
Saltburn beach to the Ship pub side of the little river is ok but libable to have quite a lot of non doggy folk who seem to think dogs should be banned full stop
Marske the Stray is good for dogs all year round large car parks loos and bins
Redcar beaches are dog banned in summer except for the Majuba end which has car park bins cafe van beach goes north for ever
Some of the smaller bays Runswick Staithes Robin Hoods Bay all have dog bans near the car parks not quite sure how you are supposed to get the other end of the beaches where dogs are permitted
Scarbrough has very little in the way of dog beaches when the tide is in and the dog friendly beaches tend to be very rocky or down a steep hill
Hope this is useful

Port Logan beach in Galloway, Scotland is lovely for dogs. A big beach, lots of sand, no restrictions, a car park at each end and a local pub with outside benches overlooking the beach. This is where 2000 acres of Sky was filmed, it is a beautiful spot but rather out of the way. This, though, has the benefit of making it peaceful.

Finding a dog friendly beach is so difficult these days so the more beaches we know, that you can let your dog off and have a good run the better, looks great Gill, must get up to Scotland some time would love to let my two off on a beach like that.. :)

I got the information on Weymouth from the Tourist Information Office before we went. They were really helpful, not only on Weymouth but other local places. Always worth a call ahead.

A list of dog friendly B&Bs is available from the Dogs Trust site, if you book through the site, DT gets a donation. Friends have used lots of these for weekends and have always had a great time.
