The Soi dogs of Bangkok.....

Post by Ellas mum »

This Xmas we spent 3 weeks with our daughter and her family in Bangkok. This was our 3rd visit in as many years, and each time I go, I am fascinated by the lives of the soi (street) dogs.

I am advised not to speak to or even look at them as they can be very unpredictable. They all vary in colour and size, but look the same, inbreeding, of course. You can't always see them unless you are on one of the walkways above the streets and roads.

They make their homes on any piece of spare land or building site they can find and sometimes you can see whole family's playing together. They are usually fed by the street traders who cook and sell their food at the roadside, and sometimes they bring along their pups too. Most look well fed but some poor souls are so thin, flea-ridden and covered in "war-wounds". Some lie in the roads and at the kerb side.

The traffic and fumes in Bangkok are horrendous. All the traffic police wear face masks, so imagine what these poor dogs are breathing in. The drivers will stop and go around them, I haven't seen a casualty yet. They are seen as vermin, and I believe that sometimes at night they are shot or poisoned. Some are rescued by kind people who go out and look for the sick and injured. If possible they are made whole, and if lucky they are adopted. Nothing like our rescues here, but at least it's something.

Like most things in Thailand, there are the rich and the poor, nothing inbetween. For the more fortunate dogs, there is this.............

This was new this year, for the dog who has everything. Yes.........a dog boutique and bakery!!! Lovely meals for your dog and fresh bread too.

Woof balls
" spinach
" gravy
" brownies
Pizza terrier etc
I don't know what's in them, but they look tasty. I've only ever seen a couple of large dogs and they were Labs, most are small, carried in bags or pockets.

I always come home thinking how lucky we are to have our rescues.

Fascinating Jean...never let it be said we're not well travelled on this site...or that we don't have an animal welfare conscience when we are abroad.

We went to the Caribbean on a cruise over Christmas...sightseeing around various islands we came across a lot of dogs...all living wild...

This is one of a pack from Isla Margherita (off Venezula) where they were living on the dockside, and seemed quite well fed?

Then we went to Antigua...found this poor soul in the cathedral graveyard, lying on a grave. I had to give her some water, other (foreign) tourists were looking at me as if I was mad...but she was sweating in the sun...I felt so sorry for her.

The dogs in Antigua were going round in packs in the streets (as were the chickens!!) and were in-fighting, one in particular caught my attention as he seemed to be whimpering and was bothered with fleas in his ears (didn't get a picture of him).

In St Lucia it was the same story, dogs living wild on the steets. I don't think a lot of people keep dogs as pets because they can't afford to feed them. We were told a story of one British family that moved there and rescued and adopted lots of dogs on the island after locals realised they were kind to dogs.

As you can see they are quite thin.

Its a shame there isn't a neutering programme on these islands as all these dogs had their bits and pieces intact and the bitches were clearly over bred.

It makes you realise why they say we are a nation of animal lovers here...I know there is cruelty, and there will be in any society but lots of our animals are fortunate in many ways...

What a lovely way to spend christmas Susan, A cruise is something I would love to do sometime.

Strange how these street dogs look similar the world over. The other thing too is that in the Asian countries, they carry a lot of disease, and rabies is rife.

Lovely picture of Amber :D

I just could not cope with seeing all those dogs with no owners it would break my heart and I would never sleep again. That poor little one on the grave looked like she had puppies. What a nightmare.

I will not voice my opinion on these asian countries, but I am sure you can imagine what it is.

Its so hard to see animals like this, its very upsetting but not a lot that can be done. I would want to bring them all back home with me.
Once when on holiday we went to market that was selling dogs, it was awful the way they where stuffed into cages, poor things.
