preferred dog food.

Post by julia »

Hello
Jan gave us 2 types of dried food when we took Poppy. In her bag from her previous home there was also a foil pack of Tesco wet food which we threw away as we fed Jasper dry food and prefer it. She is doing fine on the dry food.
Jas was fed Iams for seniors with no problems, but I have been recommended James Wellbeloved for seniors.
Alan wants to go back to Iams, but I just wondered if anybody has used James Wellbeloved. We would slowly start to introduce new food by mixing it with Poppy's existing food and hopefully not causing her any problems.
We also bought Jasper Pedigree joint care biscuits but he ended up with diarrhoea. (we know it was them because we stopped them then started again and the same happened) I wonder if anybody else has had this problem because Alan is reluctant to give Poppy them but I think it's worth a try as she may not respond in the same way.
thanks for any suggestions

We feed pero gold with pasta.. great food and our dogs thrive on it - we have however, moved our 2 oldies onto a combination of wainwrights adult light (meat in a tray) and pero but they are 12 and 14 and deserve a little spoiling.

We have used JWB and it went down well but to be honest I dont think its any better than pero

Instead of jointcare biscuits why not try glucosomine tablets (tesco do their own make nice and cheap) or perhaps a treat of pilchards in oil with their biscuits a couple of times a week - the oil does their coat and joints good

Good advice from Ian.

Both the foods I gave you have been tried and tested by most of us. If she likes the Burns or the Pero then why change just for the sake of it. Everyone recommends the food their dog is on. Doesn't always make it the best for your dog and may cause tummy upset.

We always add a small amount of meat to their main meal only a tablespoon just to add a little extra taste. Also sometimes they may prefer it soaked for a while, Though not all dogs like that either.

Hope all is well :love4

As an afterthought - we used to get our Pero from Pets at Home but they stopped selling it.

You can buy it directly from http://www.pero-petfood.co.uk and its usually next day delivery. Toby (our 3 year old goldie) has a delicate tum and it is one of the only foods he can stomach (no pun intended)

We found that although Phoebe would eat the dry food which was given to us when we met her, Poppy would not touch it especially as she was off her food and pining for Oliver.

We tried Chappie which worked for a couple of days, Winalot, Bakers with mixer and she would always leave the meat and we had to stop Phoebe from eating that as well.

Then we found Tescos Webbox Supreme wrapped like a large sausage and gave it a try. It smells foul but the dogs love it and eat every bit. We have now put them both on it and I get hassled when it is tea time, even by Poppy, which is something that has never happened before.

I dont know why this is, but they are doing very well on it, there is never any left, so as it stands, it is a winner.

Thank goodness, problem solved for the moment.

Thank you. I will certainly try Glucosamine. I actually bought some for myself recently but realised it wasn't suitable for vegetarians but I still have it in the cupboard.

Our two Golden Oldies have been on James Wellbeloved in the past. No problem with Candy who has a concrete disgestive system, however delicate tummed Jazz did suffer terrible diarrhoea from it following a bladder infection.
Now they have complete food for seniors and some meat mixed in. They also get pilchards, sardines .

Paddy is on Royal Canin and Lucy is on Burns, I think it depends on each individual dog,if they like it and it doesnt upset their tums stick with it...

Hi there!
We tried Sam on about five different kinds of dry food when we first got him (he was not enthusiastic about food at all!)
and the one he decided to settle for was Bakers with either chicken or beef, and he has been on that ever since.
However, a vet we had many years ago, told me we should always give our dog (at that time a very large Border Collie called Zac, and then our beautiful Meg who we had from 7 weeks, and who died in April three years ago, after which we contacted Jan, and got our beloved Sam) a small amount of vegetables each day; also pilchards or sardines, about once a week. We never had any trouble with either of those dogs, nor have we had with Sam. At first Sam had no interest whatsoever in eating, and I used to get down on the floor to try to get him to eat, and at first he treated everything with suspicion, but he gradually tried different things, and now will eat virtually anything. I always cook a little extra veg for him, broccoli, cauli, peas, potato etc., and a bit of the meat we are having; plus he loves a small piece of melon or peach, and sometimes he gets a dessertspoonful of rice pudding and then I am the flavour of the week.
When he had his MOT in August, the vet pronounced him a good healthy bouncing dog. He is within his recommended weight, and we find that what we give him seems to suit.
Best wishes to all - Samsmum.
