Bronson not well

Hi all,
We are out of our mind with worry about Bronson.
He has allways been a very energetic boy running round playing with other dogs up till 3 weeks ago.
We mentioned to the vets that he seemed a little stiff when he got up after his walk,the vet said it could be a strain.We took him back as we was not happy and they gave him a anti imflamotory injection and a week on metacam he did seem to improve a little but yesterday he started to tuck his leg underneath him when he sat down and he looked sorry for himself.
This morning i took him back to the vets and she is the most senior vet she noticed right away gave him a really good examination and she said that Bronson has muscle wastage and he needs an xray on his knee and hip.
He goes in tommorrow as she said that he is very young to start with somthing like this.

How old is he roughly? Try not to think the worst at this stage there could be any number of reasons for some lameness. Muscle wastage is a clue that hes had a niggle for a while, that is, hes been avoiding using that leg to its full range of movement due to tenderness, hence the muscle losing tone. But the cause of that could be absolutely anything. If he is a young and active boy, it is more likely to be an injury thats taking a long time to heal, rather than a condition, so fingers crossed the xrays will clarify things. The other thing that I would view as positive is it is just one leg. Again, generally hinting at an injury not a condition. Of course, the best placed person is the vet, (not me! some online random goldie softie), but I just wanted tell you dont despair and think the worst at this stage. More likely than not, it is injury based and what has happened is as soon as its been feeling a little better hes been off chasing those damn rabbits again and aggravating it.

Hope Bronson is ok , its just like when you have a baby and they cant tell you whats wrong,worrying goes into overdrive. Keep positive it could be many things,give him a big hug from us, we will all be thinking of him.

Try to take your mind off it until you know what it is, i know its easier said than done but if you dwell on you tend to think of the worse case scenario! I'm sure he will fine and you'll be wondering what on earth you were worrying about afterwards.

It may not be as bad as you are thinking, we all think the worst at first.. It may be that he has damaged his cruciate ligament, which often happens in daft Goldens who try to turn too quickly for their weight. The sooner it is diagnosed the sooner he can be back to normal,

We always fear the worst because they can't tell us where their pain is... Ginnie had her cruiate ligament 'go' a year after we had her from Jan, (9 yrs ago) when the vet operated he said she had arthritis and maybe had been lying out in a concreted yard could have caused this but couldn't he be sure... anyway prior to this we noticed that she tucked her right leg underneath and would occasionally 'squeak' if she didn't quite lie down without thinking about how she was going to do it, and she had anti inflamatory injections and metacam ( I know a lot of people have had great success with this, but non of our dogs have responded well to it, but have done with rimadyl) Ginnie had her cruciate operation and we followed our vets advice to the letter, even to the point of her being on a lead when going to toilet in our back garden, and then many weeks of excercise of a lead, I can't remember when she last had a rimadyl (touch wood, I have some just in case....) she does have glucosamine and chrondroitin (petvits from zipvit) every morning in her breakfast which has certainly helped, she still jumps onto our bed which is very high up and she has got to be anything between ten and a half to twelve yrs now, Ginnies leg looked like a big drumstick after her 'op' and her muscles were wasted and we had to build her up and back to good health again, we got there after several months, the vet did say that she may have a slight limp after the op but it would not be a painful limp. Ginnie doesn't have any limp, but our vet always warn you of anything and everything, which I think worries me more sometimes !!!

As Jan says daft Goldens, and our Ginnie is one of these, my heart is in my mouth when we holiday at New England Bay as the silly old dog runs over the rocky outcrops, and she also swims out much further than I want her to... she 'did' her cruciate chasing Abby (who could turn on a sixpence, and Ginnie didn't one day as she is a much bigger dog)

Like every caring dog owner we always fear the worst, because we love them so much.

Hi Got back from the vets and after he had an xray the vet said his hips are good.But he needs his crucial ligament doing as this is the problem (jan you was right) He goes in tomorrow at (9 00) i guess he wont be juming up and sown now for a few weeks.Thanks for all your messages and we will keep you updated on Bronsons recovery. I am just relived that his was not his hips at least they can do somthing for him.

Hope all goes well tomorrow for Bronson. When we read your post lastnight, said to David, "I wonder if it's a cruciate problem". At least now, you know what is wrong and can deal with it. Your Vet will give you all the info' on his recovery, it will take some time, but as Lynda said, her girl is well now.
