Tissue Issues!

Post by Charlie's Angel »

Charlie is only 8 months old but has major issues with tissues!

As a rule we always make sure we have control over whatever he does. After walks he has to make sure he waits by the front door before he can come in, he has to wait a few minutes for his dinner while its on the floor in front of him, he has to sit and wait before we let him sit with us. We do this so he knows that we are in control and not him. We can also take toys and his bone off him without him doing anything. However if he manages to get a tissue, if i try to take it from him he growls and tries to bite me so i have to use treats to make him spit it out.

I know its a possession thing and he doesn't want me to have it and that possession is 9 10ths of dog law.

Has anyone else had this problem or suggestions on what i can do? Will getting him castrated when he's 12 months help much?

We're doing the obvious, trying not to let him get tissues but there is still the odd occassion where he's quicker than us at getting to it.

Any help much appreciated!

We had a golden who had a thing about tissues. She could spot one across the park at a distance of at least half a mile (well it seemed that far) and we could never get them off her either!!! No matter how hard we tried, we could not get her out of the habit of eating them and it seemed that the dirtier they were the better they tasted :2091: We tried everything from treats to telling her off (if we got there in time), but usually they had disappeared by the time we got to her only to reappear sometime later from the opposite end. They never harmed her from being a puppy to when we eventually lost her at 13 years of age.

We have jasper and he can spot, sniff out tissues form trouserrs, handbags, visitors coats,
and you just have to try to persuade him with something better than a tissue if you get time
all three of ours goldies have had a mania for tissue and toilet rolls. I have even lost the
pockets inside my jeans when he has sneaked upstairs routing for tissues.

wouldnt be without him for the world even wouldnt swap him for ronaldo more pricless than
anything we have

Can't give you any advice I'm afraid. He sounds such a good boy with everything else, I think I'd just be inclined to admit defeat on the tissue issue.

Our Willow is a madam for them as well. What is it with these Goldens? Have just been for a walk with them, and met a lady we know with a Lab'. Whilst we were talking, I felt my pocket go, there was Willow shredding the evidence. Also, our back lawn at times looks as though there's been a wedding ceremony, confetti Willow style all over the place. Kitchen roll is a prefered favourite, but any type of tissue will surfice. On holiday the other week, I woke to find loo roll all around, on doing a recky to the bathroom, I was sure the Andrex puppy had paid a visit in the night. :1969

Looks like we'll have to make do if we have one of those retrievers! :1968

Main thing for us is that he doesn't make himself ill.

Hi :2035:
Charlie does remarkably well for such a young dog. As Lynn says, I wouldn't worry too much about the 'issue with the tissue', it will probably work itself out (if you know what I mean).

We have a lovely postman who always knocks at the door so that he can give Ella a biscuit, after which he gives her the letters. She always gives them up.........but only after she's shredded most of them. She stands on them and rips all the corners off :1941: :1960

Hahaha, thats great! We're never in when the postman comes so i cant get him to do that which is a shame. He is pretty amazing! although incrediby mischeivous, sometimes i cant get angry with him, just double over laughing. I'm really going to have to put some pics on here so everyone can see my precious monkey! :1939:

What does it matter if he eats a tissue why have all the confrontation. It's not worth the hassle. Castration will not solve that.

I do wonder why he has to wait for his dinner when it has been put on the floor, seems a bit like torture to me.

We inherited a 'tissue issue' and a 'sock situation' with Rolo, in fact anything you didn't realise you'd lost situation but 18months down the line he's fine. He's still a playful pup and since he was castrated he has more of a ball obsession than anything else!

Sorted it for you. You seem to have become obsessed with the ball issue as did Rolo :love4

We must if been lucky with ours as non of them have had obsessions as bad as growling.
Troy was a little sod for going through the waste paper bin and shredding everything.
Luke was very much into socks and loved to pull them off your feet :2029: He also sucked a teddy when going to sleep.
Brad loves ball and always have to great you with one.
Ella well she is a real lady and just loves to please :) Although she likes teddies as well.

Its only torture if you forget to tell them they can have it! :1968

When we took him to his training classes it was one of the ways she suggested to improve his self control. We've done it with lots of things, coming in from the garden, sitting on the sofa etc and we're glad we've done it.

Its funny their little idiosyncrisys! (dont think thats spelt right but you get the jist!)
