The Catflap

Post by julie »

I loved the stories about goldies peeking out of catflaps but in our house the catflap raises another issue. Honey has a growing habbit of tearing it off the wall (goes thru a wall not a door). Has anybody else ever known this? Can anybody advise an answer?

Honey is approx 10.5yrs old and came home 2.5 yrs ago. She was a stray dog. She lives with two tom cats and has always been great with them (and the cats who live at my Mum's house when she goes there). She dislikes cats who come into either garden and will chase them out. I have in the past found a neighbour's cat in the house doing some sneaky food stealing.

This only started in about May / June this year and so far the catflap has been off the wall 5 times and is in pieces when I find it - this always happens when left alone. I've tried putting a chair in front and this now has some teethmark decoration (no other piece has ever been touched since she came home).

We presume she's doing it to chase this cat away from her house if it's coming in. As this is recently started, any suggestions how we could de-learn this? Or how to treat Honey afterwards (she lowers her eyes when I pick up the pieces without me saying anything).

Thanks
