Hello All.
I was sat watching TV today and caught the end of the Coronation Street omnibus. Its a programme I have not watched for a long time. Jazz was on her bed as usual. When the theme tune came on she began to howl (or what my Mum calls sing!). She does it to the Emmerdale tune and BBC news, so I am assuming it is something to do with the pitch of the music. I was wondering if anyone else's dogs do the same thing. She has never done it at any other time.
Helen.

Don't know what sets it offf but Molly does it all the time.
We've trained her to do it on command (almost never - except when she speaks to her grandma in Canada on the skype phone).
We've also taught her to stop with a hand signal when she does it at a bad time (I'm a minister and sometimes it's important not to have a dog song when I'm speaking to someone).
You can train them to start. You can train them to stop. But I've no clue how you work out why they do it.
We call it "speaking whale" like the little blue fish on Finding Nemo!

One of our Retrievers " Orphan Annie" would throw her head back and howl like a wolf if a fire engine passed with its blues and twos going.
As the fire engine had to pass our house to get to a local sheltered accommodation block this would happen quite frequently.
The residents of this block frequently set off their smoke alarms in their kitchens. The residents would then be mustered on the lawn and then the finger pointing began to find out who had set the alarm off.
The miscreant would the be humiliated in public !!!

Re: Howling/Singing
My 8 year old daughter plays the clarinet, the only trouble is when she practices Jasper will sing ( howl ) with her, its very funny, my daughter always ends up in a fit of giggles, and then stops practicing.
When its parents teacher evening I,m going to have to say " Sorry Sophie can,t practice at home as the dog always wants to join in "
I have had to say to the teacher " Sophie has done her homework but the dog chewed it "

Hello there! Samsmum here!
Before we had our rescue dog - Sam - we had a bitch called Meg. She would lie at David's feet when Emmerdale and Coronation Street were on, but as soon as the final music of Coronation Street started she would get up and go and stand by her dish in the kitchen, waiting to be fed.
Sam is a different kettle of fish. He loves to watch television, but when we switch it off late at night, he picks up his mop (what is left of one of those rope pulls with a knot at each end!! It looks like a mop), and off he goes to bed. If we don't join him within a couple of minutes, he comes to see where we are.
He now does a little dance (on four legs). I rotate my hand and he goes round and round about three times, and then I say "lie down and roll over", and he obliges, then rushes up for a treat.
Aren't these dogs wonderful! The things they can do (and I mean besides "retrieving").
I was speaking to my Doctor the other day, and asking how her dog was getting on. She said it was fine, and I said"You know, I think people who say they don't like dogs are missing something - all the love that is between us and our pets - and she said "Those people are usually too houseproud. With a couple of kids and the dog, I am happy as a sandboy, and a bit of dirt and a few hairs never hurt anybody! How right she is!!
Best wishes to you all, and I hope the New Year is proving to be a good one for you.
Joyce.
