She realised with great distress this morning that the liver cake we bought at the funday is almost gone. She blames the cats!!

Could anyone share a recipe to make the more biscuity kind? The only one I have found is more a meaty texture and I must make amends for not buying more.

Some recipes here...think you might get more of a biscuity texture with more flour...the recipes above are pretty much the same...

Thanks for the links. Have also managed to find one, that from the pictures, looks a lot like the biscuity version that Honey now loves soooooooo much.

Will be trying out this weekend, with the windows open, and air freshener to hand I have been advised. Will let you know how we get on (have to say we as Honey supervises me when we're baking - hot ovens and all that, I can't be trusted on my own) and pass this recipe on if it works ok.

Have to say tho, the recipe is not so mouth-watering as those from Sam.

If your recipe is not the one you want I can always ask Wendy who was on that stall and brought all the goodies.

It's official, liver cake smells!

Here's the recipe we used;

1lb lambs liver
6oz porridge oats
1 bulb garlic (yes, the WHOLE bulb )
Open windows and nose peg

Mouli the liver and the peeled garlic til a smooth, fluffy mixture and mix in the oats.
Spread approx 2/3 inch thick in a baking tray and bake for 20 mins at Gas 6 (sorry don't know electric version).

It stinks - Honey didn't lie in the kitchen, that's how bad it is - but she absolutely loves the stuff!!!! Thankfully the recipe makes plenty so we have two bags of chunks in the freezer and one (in a very airtight container) in the fridge.

All this talk about liver cake reminds me of years ago, seeing a recipe in the North West Year Book, I think from Carol Halliwell. Decided to give it a try. Well the ensuing mess and smell ensured that it would NEVER, EVER be repeated. What a mess, it took longer to clean the kitchen and utensils than to make the darned stuff, but the dogs adored it
To recap Jeans story, the dogs now love Fish Jerky or Sea Biscuits. It does smell strong, but they go mad for it. I just have to remember to put some in a plastic bag in my pocket, and NOT call into the village shops on my rounds, believe me, no one stands at the side of you at the counter!!!!!
One of the links that Susan put on was for biscuits, they sound quite good. Sausage meat, wholemeal flour, am definately going to give them a try.
Jean put me onto the most fantastic Pet Food store, Healthy Options in Colne. They produce all their own feeds, which do not contain colourants, and the dreaded E numbers. They have a range of treat biscuits, all natural ingredients, the dogs loved them. Was surprised when told that the majority of treats have all the baddies in them, just look at the colours. So I guess that making your own is far healthier than the bought stuff.

P.S. Have you tried to buy sausage meat???? Only done at Xmas !!!!! Oh well, will have to foray further afield.

I think it must be utter devotion to make liver cake for a second or third time!!

The sausage meat bones do sounds nice - will have to give it a go. My local butchers make their own sausages so I can get the meat from them all year round. Maybe worth trying your local butcher. They couldn't believe their best liver was going into dog biscuits .... or that Honey shares my sirloin on a regular basis.

Think the next doggy-bake we do will be chicken / oaty / wheaty crunches.

A doggy cook book next time? .... but only under advanced taste testing, Honey will sign up as a volunteer!
