Everyone on this site has probably lost at least one dog. They are all special, all different and all bring back happy memories.
Here are just a few memories of Timber
Almost 10 years ago we went to look at a litter of pups near the east coast. The pups were a much lighter than our preferred golden colour, however we chose one that was the darkest male and a few weeks later went back to pick him up. He lay on Lynn’s lap in the car and slept the whole journey back to his new home. Almost a 2 hr journey. He woke up just as we approached his new home. We called him Timber.
As a puppy he was unlike any other pup we had owned, on the go all day and only slept at night. He grew up into a very handsome young dog but was very willful with a mind of his own. Lynn decided to have a go at showing him and took him to training classes then to a few shows, however in spite of Lynn’s experience in the show ring he proved far too difficult to handle. At one show a very experienced retriever lady asked to have a go with him. He then proceeded to pull her all over the show ground. He was incredibly powerful. That was the end of his show career.
Shortly after we had him neutered and this transformed him. He was still as lively and full of beans as ever but became eager to please us and much more loving.
One of his favorite things was going swimming. We spent many house walking along the river Wharfe, with Timber and later Willow also in and out of the water along the way.
Everyone with a Golden knows that people often stop to stoke them. This is where Timber was in his element. He would sit down, lean up against the stranger, and usually put his foot on one of theirs so they couldn’t escape then gaze up at them as they stoked his silky head. Many people have asked if the could take him home.
If I had a pound for every time I heard someone say “you’re gorgeous” I would have been able to retire on a bigger pension than the boss of HBOS.
A few weeks ago he started with a slight limp. To cut a long story short, on Monday he had some x-rays done and they confirmed our worst fears. He had bone cancer.
The vet was unable to do anything. Pain relief wasn’t working and the only option to save him from ever increasing pain was to let him go.
His Dinner dish is still on the window bottom. Willow has moved into “the bosses” corner, and in the cupboard is his brand new collar ready for his next holiday in Cornwall.
Utterly, utterly devastating.
Like Lenny you may want to see him again on pet gallery –Timber the film star
Thank you everyone
